Growin' Up Day Care

Fool Me Once

Growin' Up Day Care is Lily’s childcare center and, at a moment of danger, a practical refuge for Maya and her family. Its routines of identity checks, layered security, and cautious supervision turn a familiar place of care into a crucial point of protection; for Maya, it is also where the sight of Lily safe and absorbed in play brings a sudden, painful measure of relief.

Setting and Safeguards

When Maya fears that people who may be pursuing her could wait at her home, she chooses Growin' Up Day Care as a meeting point with Eddie instead. She studies the surroundings before approaching and circles once more to check for anything suspicious. The center’s layout seems almost like an army base: it is difficult to approach without being seen, and security is arranged in layers.

Buzz-locked doors protect both the entrance and the individual rooms. Maya reasons that an intruder could still force entry, but the locks would give staff time to contact authorities; the police station is only a block away. These features make the center more than a convenient pickup location. In a moment when Maya cannot assume that her own home is safe, its visibility, controlled access, and proximity to police offer a measure of security.

Pickup and Verification

The center’s safeguards also shape ordinary decisions about who may collect Lily. In one exchange, Maya contacts the staff by Skype while police are present and explains that Lily’s uncle Eddie will pick her up. Miss Kitty does not accept the arrangement on trust alone: she requires Maya to complete several checks and asks for confirming phone calls. Maya welcomes this scrutiny, treating the extra verification as protection rather than an obstacle.

At another pickup, Miss Kitty buzzes Maya and Eddie inside and helps them complete the paperwork. Eddie has his identification photograph taken, making his identity part of the formal process before Lily can leave. When Eddie, Alexa, and Daniel escort Maya and Lily out to the car, Lily protests the departure, but exhaustion quickly overtakes her; her eyes are closed by the time Maya fastens her into the car seat.

A Safe Place, and a Difficult Farewell

The center’s security matters especially when Maya has reason to avoid going home. After arranging to meet Eddie, she checks the surrounding area before pulling in behind his car. She keeps her Glock in her waistband, a sign that the danger has not simply disappeared because she has reached the daycare. The protected setting allows her to bring Eddie into the plan while keeping the immediate meeting away from her house.

During the paperwork, Maya sees Lily in a sun-bright yellow room. Lily is wearing a smock made from one of Maya’s old shirts; paint covers her hands, and she is smiling. The sight makes Maya’s heart feel suddenly light, even as it hurts to look at her daughter from outside the room. Miss Kitty offers to let her go in and say hello, but Maya declines and asks whether they are finished. The center thus holds two realities at once: Lily is safe and happily occupied there, while Maya remains separated from her by the precautions her circumstances demand.
