Paterson

Fool Me Once

Paterson, New Jersey, becomes a crucial point in Maya’s search for Isabella: a place first marked by an unexplained pattern in Hector’s truck movements, then by a high-rise where Maya finds both Hector and Isabella. The city’s role is practical and immediate, bringing Maya’s surveillance to the threshold of a confrontation.

The GPS Lead

Maya’s search begins with the GPS tracker she had attached to Hector’s vehicle. Reviewing its history, she sees that his truck has repeatedly visited an address in a Paterson housing project. The stop does not fit the work pattern she expects of a landscaper, though she recognizes that Hector could have friends or a girlfriend there. The unexplained visits make Paterson a lead rather than proof, and she decides to follow it.

Fulton Street Stakeout

In Paterson, Maya finds Hector’s Dodge Ram in a parking lot beside a high-rise on Fulton Street. She walks past the gate and checks whether the truck is unlocked, but cannot use it to discover where Hector is in the building or whether Isabella is with him. She returns to her car and watches the entrance, keeping the pickup in view in case Hector approaches from another direction.

Maya waits for half an hour. Her damaged cell phone and the limited service on her disposable phones leave her unable to check whether Corey has posted about EAC Pharmaceuticals. She suspects that the attempted kidnapping may be connected to information he has released and that a Burkett may be trying to eliminate loose ends, but this remains her working theory as she watches the building.

The Encounter

Hector eventually comes out and uses his key fob to unlock the truck. Maya has already drawn her gun and is preparing to follow him, approach from behind, and force him to take her to Isabella. Before she can carry out that plan, Isabella also walks out of the entrance. Her appearance changes the immediate problem: Maya no longer needs Hector to lead her to Isabella, but must decide how to act with both of them present. Paterson thus turns the GPS clue into a direct encounter while leaving the confrontation unresolved at this point.
