Katy Is Attacked in Will's Apartment
Gone for GoodThe attack on Katy Miller in Will Klein’s apartment turns an exhausted attempt to escape grief into a desperate struggle to keep her alive. Caught and silenced before he can reach her, Will must break free while the masked intruder moves from his room toward Katy.
Background and the First Assault
After making sure Katy Miller was comfortable and settling her on the couch, Will Klein tries to read, goes online, exercises, and stretches rather than lie down and let grief catch him again. Sleep eventually overtakes him. Still asleep, he feels a jerk at his hand and the click of metal; when he stirs, the attacker leaps onto his chest, pins his shoulders, and cuffs his other hand to the bed. The assailant tapes Will’s mouth shut, wrapping the tape repeatedly around his head until he can neither speak nor cry out. His broken nose makes breathing painful, and his attempts to struggle against the cuffs and the attacker’s weight fail. Then Will remembers Katy alone in the other room. The intruder, visible only as a dark, masked shape, leaves him bound and enters the room where Katy is sleeping. Will hears her scream, abruptly cut short, and then hears her call out, “John”. The name offers no explanation, but the interrupted cries make the danger immediate: Will is trapped, unable to see what is happening to her or call for help.
Breaking Free and Confronting the Attacker
With Katy’s screams cut short and no way to reach her, Will thrashes against the cuffs until exhaustion brings him close to giving up. He remembers a move Squares had taught him: the plow pose, or Halasana, in which the legs swing over the head. Will uses the movement to twist himself off the bed and get upright despite his hands remaining cuffed and his mouth taped. He then drives his shoulder into the headboard and repeatedly rams the bed against the door. On the third impact, he pulls against the cuffs at the same moment the bed strikes the wall; the bed rails give way, freeing him. He opens the bedroom door and finds Katy on the floor, limp and apparently unconscious, while the assailant straddles her and chokes her.
Will launches himself at the attacker, who releases Katy, turns, and uses Will’s momentum to throw him across the room. Will lands in a reading chair, which topples beneath him; his head strikes a side table and then the floor. As he struggles to rise, he sees the black-clad assailant holding a knife and moving back toward Katy. Will scrambles across the floor for a gun. He manages to shift the tape enough to shout, “Freeze or I'll shoot!” but the attacker turns away and reaches for Katy again. Will finds the gun and fires without time to aim. The assailant jumps toward the door and escapes. Will considers shooting after him, then stops; Katy is not moving, and he turns his attention to her.
Suspense and Restricted Perspective
The attack’s suspense is built from a sharp mismatch between what Will Klein can hear and what he can do: the assailant remains a black outline, while Katy Miller’s interrupted screams carry the danger across the apartment. Her cry of “John ” supplies a name without identifying the intruder or clarifying what connects him to her. The scene then changes its pace as Will sees the knife: although the next actions take only seconds, he experiences them as stretched into an alternate time, a formal pause that makes the choice before him feel impossibly narrow. The narration keeps that uncertainty intact; the threat is understood through fragments of sound, movement, and delayed sight rather than through an explanation of the attacker’s identity.
The Aftermath and the Scene’s Turn
Will’s first response to physical violence is to shut down, a pattern he recognizes even as Katy’s cries force his attention beyond his own helplessness. The scene’s reversal is not that he becomes an assured fighter: he remains restrained, injured, and unable to see the intruder clearly. What changes is that he acts despite those limits, and then stops short of pursuing violence once the attacker flees. Katy is still motionless when the immediate struggle ends; the next chapter moves to an officer coming to hear Will’s account, carrying the attack from the apartment into its aftermath without yet resolving Katy’s condition.
