Little bear

Good Morning, Midnight

“Little bear” is the affectionate name Jean uses for Sully, carrying both the warmth of their early closeness and the pain of their later estrangement. After Jean’s death, Sully remembers the name as part of an imagined reunion that can no longer happen.

Early Meaning

As a child, Sully admired Jean and wanted to follow her into important work. Jean explained Sully’s absent father through his devotion to his calling, telling her that he had no room left in his heart for the family. Against that explanation, the nickname offered a more intimate assurance: Jean called her “Little bear” and told her that the two of them were the perfect size for each other. The phrase framed their bond as a family in its own right, even while Jean’s account of Sully’s father made his absence seem necessary.

Estrangement

That assurance became harder to hold after Jean married, moved to Canada, and had twins. She stopped working and became absorbed in motherhood, while Sully felt displaced in the new family. Sully applied to boarding school, and the absence she had hoped would prompt Jean to protest was accepted without disagreement. The nickname’s earlier closeness thus stands in contrast to a relationship in which Sully’s anger and departure went unchallenged.

A Name Recalled

After Jean died, Sully continued to imagine that they might find their way back to one another. In that hoped-for future, they would be together under the stars, and Jean would call her “little bear” as she had before. The remembered address makes the fantasy specific: reconciliation would mean not only meeting again, but recovering a form of closeness Sully associated with childhood. The call from her stepfather confirming Jean’s death ended that possibility, and Sully’s long-held hope evaporated.

Significance

The expression links an early promise of belonging to the later experience of separation. It recalls Jean’s ability to make Sully feel that the two of them were enough for each other, but its return in Sully’s imagined reunion also exposes what could not be repaired before Jean died. “Little bear” remains a private measure of the relationship Sully lost: a familiar name through which she can still picture the closeness she wanted back, even when the hoped-for reconciliation is no longer possible.
