Soyuz Reenters the Atmosphere
Good Morning, MidnightSoyuz Reenters the Atmosphere is the point at which Sully, Harper, and Tal leave Aether and begin their descent toward Earth. Their departure divides the crew, while the descent turns a long-anticipated return into an immediate test of survival. The pod enters the atmosphere and deploys its parachutes, but the scene closes before it lands, leaving the crew’s destination—and what awaits them there—unconfirmed.
Context and Departure
The return takes place in the wake of Devi’s death during a spacewalk. Sully has been haunted by the sight of Devi drifting away and has withdrawn from her crewmates, at first managing grief by returning to the work of bringing the new communications system online. Working beside Thebes and sharing a quiet meal with the crew have helped her recognize that the loss belongs to all of them, not only to her. By the time she remains to listen for a response to their restored signal, she is more prepared to face what comes next, even though no reply has yet reached them.
The departure makes that next step a separation from the people staying aboard Aether. Five crew members gather at the remaining Soyuz pod and linger together before the undocking sequence. Tal enters first to prepare the craft. Harper offers Thebes and Ivanov a final handshake and a private word; Sully embraces Ivanov, then hesitates before Thebes. Their repeated embraces and the tears between them make the division tangible. Thebes confirms that he is sure of his decision, then gently sends Sully into the pod. He and Ivanov close the door as the departing three settle in to leave.
Undocking and Atmospheric Entry
Sully straps into the seat beside Harper. Beyond the sealed door, the crew’s farewells give way to the contained sounds of breathing and movement as Tal works through the systems. He consults the reentry manual and checks the instruments before lowering his visor. The departure itself is gentle: the Soyuz releases from Aether’s docking port, ending one journey and beginning another.
Tal first fires a short engine burn to move the pod away from the station and into a parallel orbit. A longer burn carries it around the planet and farther from Aether, gradually lowering its orbit until the craft meets the atmosphere at an angle. Tal then sheds the Soyuz’s orbital module and instrument-panel components. The crew feels the bolts release as the discarded sections spin away; the descent pod continues alone toward the denser atmosphere.
The change in conditions is abrupt. Plasma spreads across the window and darkens it as the pod enters the atmosphere. Gravity builds, and Sully fears that the Soyuz may not withstand the return: it has been unused for a long time, and she worries about the heat shield and parachutes. Tal concentrates on steering. Sully reaches for Harper, who covers her hand with his gloved one, offering reassurance without interrupting Tal’s work.
Descent and Uncertain Homecoming
The first parachute opens with a sharp jolt and the wind becomes audible around the pod. A second parachute follows, its deployment gentler, and the descent steadies. As the pod falls through the atmosphere, Sully’s immediate terror eases enough for her to accept the possibility of surviving and to wonder what kind of world lies below. Through the blackened window she glimpses a patch of clear blue sky. The image gives the approaching Earth the force of home, though the scene does not show the pod landing.
The return is therefore both a physical descent and an emotional threshold. Sully leaves behind the crew members who remain aboard Aether, carrying the memory of Devi and the shared losses of the mission with her. Beside Harper, she moves from the dangers of orbit toward an Earth whose condition is still unknown. In the final moments before the narrative breaks off, the sight of the sky makes the journey seem worthwhile; Sully also recognizes the depth of her love for Harper.
