Space Oddity
Good Morning, MidnightSpace Oddity is the music for a shared dance among Sully, Harper, and Devi, and a brief moment of intimacy for Sully and Harper. Its place in the scene turns Harper’s invitation to dance with the group into something Sully momentarily experiences as belonging to the two of them alone.
The Song in the Bar
Harper taps Sully on the shoulder, his face shiny with sweat, while Devi beckons from a few feet away. Harper invites Sully to dance, saying it is their song. As David Bowie’s voice fills the bar, he leads her from her bar stool toward the crowded dance floor, reaching back to take her hand and pull her toward the center. Devi is still waving them over, making the invitation explicitly shared.
A Shared Song, Briefly Heard as Intimate
Harper means the song as one that belongs to all of them. Sully understands that, yet as she moves with him through the crowd, she briefly thinks he means it belongs just to the two of them. That small difference between Harper’s collective invitation and Sully’s private reading gives the song its particular significance in the scene: the dance holds friendship and intimacy together without resolving them into the same thing. The moment lasts only as they move into the crowd, but the song makes Sully’s fleeting sense of being singled out part of an occasion shared with Devi.
