World War II

Good Morning, Midnight (Reginald Hill Edition)

World War II is present in the novel less as a narrated campaign than as a family inheritance: Tony Kafka carries his father’s Purple Heart, and his father’s wartime rescue story gives lasting force to the principle of helping people in need. The war’s significance lies in how that memory turns gratitude into an obligation Tony cannot regard as repaid.

The War in Family Memory

Tony’s father repeatedly told him how, while serving as a soldier, he was rescued by an American sergeant who had not previously treated him warmly. The sergeant carried him to safety and died after doing so. Tony heard the story throughout childhood; as he grew older, he questioned whether his father’s sense of indebtedness to the country had already been answered by his years of service. His father rejected that accounting: the rescue had been given because he was a soldier and needed help, not as a debt that could be settled by repayment.

The Purple Heart

The war’s memory also takes physical form in the Purple Heart medal belonging to Tony’s father. Tony wears it on the thin gold chain he habitually keeps around his neck, treating it as a good-luck charm. When he removes his black robe, the medal remains the one visible object on him, making a private family inheritance conspicuous. It is not merely a keepsake: it connects Tony to his father’s account of rescue and to the moral expectation that help received creates responsibility toward others.

An Inherited Obligation

Tony understands his father’s lesson through his own relationship with Kay Kafka. He stayed on because she had needed help repeatedly, and he came to feel that each act of helping deepened rather than discharged his debt. The novel distinguishes this personal obligation from patriotic debt: after the world changed the previous September, Tony began to question whether he belonged where he was, in both a practical and a broader sense. World War II therefore persists not as background chronology alone but as the source of an ethic that binds Tony to others even as his sense of place becomes uncertain.
