The World Goes Quiet

The World Goes Quiet
Failed attempts
Augustine scans military, emergency, and amateur frequencies after the evacuation, but every channel is silent. He initially tries to explain the absence as a temporary technical problem.
The scale of the silence
With no reply and no arriving aircraft, the silence becomes evidence of a crisis much larger than the observatory. Augustine does not yet have enough concern to keep searching consistently.
Two Searches Begin

Two Searches Begin
A new purpose
Concern for Iris changes Augustine’s motives, and he resumes radio work in search of another human voice. He remembers his childhood skill with amateur equipment and begins transmitting from the observatory.
Signals from space
Far from Earth, Sully also scans beyond her assigned channels, hoping to find broadcasts or other evidence of life. Their separate searches run in parallel without either person knowing about the other.
A Better Station

A Better Station
Delayed exploration
Augustine knows a radio shed at Lake Hazen may offer stronger equipment, but initially avoids it. The calm of his new life with Iris makes the search feel less urgent.
Duty renewed
As his health declines, he realizes the search is not only for his own benefit. He finally enters the station, powers the equipment, and begins calling across the frequencies.

First contact
After long stretches of static, Augustine hears a faint signal and answers it. The voice belongs to Sully aboard Aether, returning to Earth after a year without contact.
Limited knowledge
They exchange their locations and the few facts each knows. Neither can explain what happened to civilization, but each now has confirmation that another person is still alive.
A Connection Across Distance

A Connection Across Distance
Brief conversations
Sully and Augustine reconnect intermittently as the spacecraft enters Earth’s orbit. Their calls remain vulnerable to distance, weather, and the turning planet.
Company without rescue
Sully learns details of the Arctic and recognizes a loneliness that resembles her own. Although neither can promise a rescue, the exchange makes the unknown feel briefly less empty.
