The mother-daughter relationship between Judith Butler and Miranda Butler

Hallowe'en Party

Judith Butler is Miranda Butler’s mother and the keeper of a secret about her daughter’s parentage. Their relationship moves from urgent maternal protection to a revelation that makes Miranda’s danger more intimate: Michael Garfield, whose plans put Miranda at risk, is also her father, though Miranda does not know it.

A Mother’s Protection

When Ariadne Oliver tells Judith to pack and return to London with her, Judith initially resists leaving home. She has practical reasons to stay, and says she does not want to leave just then. But she also considers whether Miranda might remain behind with the Reynolds or Rowena Drake. Ariadne firmly insists that Miranda must come too, pointing out that two Reynolds children have been killed. Judith acknowledges the danger and no longer treats leaving Miranda behind as a reasonable option.

The Hidden Paternity

After Poirot assures Judith that Miranda is safe, he asks whether she is also Michael Garfield’s daughter. Judith confirms that she is, but says Miranda has no idea. Judith had known Michael when she was young, fallen deeply in love with him, and then become afraid; she does not explain the fear further. Her silence has kept Miranda from knowing that the man she encountered at Woodleigh Common was her father.

Danger and Significance

The concealed parentage sharpens the contrast between the two adults’ relationships with Miranda. Judith’s choices in the crisis are protective: despite her reluctance to leave, she agrees that Miranda must go with Ariadne rather than be left in a potentially dangerous household. Poirot, meanwhile, explains that Michael loved Miranda in his own way but was prepared to sacrifice her to save himself, arranging a ritual death for her at Kilterbury Ring. The revelation therefore joins a private family secret to the immediate threat against Miranda, while Judith’s confirmation establishes the truth that her daughter herself still does not know.
