A Grandfather in Grief
Life after loss
Gustav Mahler visits Anna, whose grief has made her withdraw from daily life. He returns to his own home and cannot bear to dismantle Elias’s Lego fortress.
An inheritance of attachment
The toys preserve a relationship that neither man can resume. Mahler’s helplessness grows from love as much as guilt, preparing him to act when the impossible reaches the grave.
The Grave Opens

The Grave Opens
A return to Råcksta
After hearing that the dead are awakening, Mahler goes to Elias’s grave and hears scraping beneath the ground. He digs with bare hands until he reaches the coffin.
A child changed by death
Inside, Elias is a desiccated, mummified body rather than the child Mahler remembers. Mahler carries him out anyway, choosing care despite the horror of what he sees.
Care through Small Acts

Care through Small Acts
Making a body comfortable
Mahler bathes Elias, treats his skin with lotion, and gives him salt water through a syringe. These acts do not restore his appearance, but they allow Mahler to do something for him.
A response appears
Elias swallows and begins to hold a bottle. Small motions become evidence of capacity, giving Mahler a reason to continue caring and experimenting.
Flight from Authority

Flight from Authority
Protecting Elias
After police and medical personnel search Anna’s apartment, Mahler decides to take Elias away from the authorities. He and Anna leave for the family’s summer cottage.
A damaged partnership
Mahler treats the decision as an urgent necessity, while Anna insists that she is Elias’s mother and must decide too. Their shared flight opens old conflicts between them.
A Son Beyond Recovery

A Son Beyond Recovery
Hope and danger
After a drowned returned man attacks Mahler, Anna flees by boat with Elias. She learns that he can remain within her, then chooses to release him when the Fisher approaches.
The grandfather’s absence
Mahler’s fate is cut off by the attack, while Elias’s departure unfolds with Anna alone. The care that began in a grave ends in a sea of uncertain passage.
