A Sweet Invitation

A Sweet Invitation
Food in the clearing
Lost and hungry, Hansel and Gretel discover a house made of sweets. Its edible walls and roof appear to answer their immediate need.
The Witch emerges quietly and invites them inside. Her welcome conceals the danger that makes the house a trap rather than a refuge.
From host to captor
The Witch reveals that she intends to eat the children. She confines Hansel and keeps Gretel to help prepare him.
A Delayed Meal

A Delayed Meal
The Witch’s routine
The Witch expects Hansel to grow fatter before she eats him. She feeds him and checks his finger to judge his condition.
Hansel repeatedly presents a chicken bone, exploiting her poor eyesight. The Witch grows impatient as her intended meal seems not to gain weight.
Impatience takes hold
Her frustration shifts the danger toward Gretel. Rather than waiting longer, the Witch decides to use the Oven and demands that Gretel inspect it.
The Oven Reversal

The Oven Reversal
A fatal demonstration
The Witch tells Gretel to enter the Oven. Gretel pretends she does not know how, prompting the Witch to demonstrate.
The Witch’s impatience and confidence make her vulnerable to the trick. Gretel shuts the heavy door while the Witch is inside.
Captor defeated
The Witch dies in the Oven, and Gretel frees Hansel. The danger that began at the candy house ends through the Witch’s own instrument.
