Night of the Shrieking Shack

The Night of the Shrieking Shack is the novel's pivotal sequence, in which the long-pursued fugitive Sirius Black is finally cornered, the truth about his innocence and Peter Pettigrew's survival is forced into the open, and the hidden history of the Marauders—Moony, Wormtail, Padfoot, and Prongs—is laid bare. The events of this single night overturn the story's central mystery, transform Harry's understanding of his parents' deaths, and set in motion a desperate rescue that redefines his future.

Background and the Trap

The night begins with Harry, Ron, and Hermione sneaking out of Hogwarts under the Invisibility Cloak to visit Hagrid, whose Hippogriff Buckbeak is about to be executed at sunset. The execution party, including Cornelius Fudge and the executioner Walden Macnair, arrives at Hagrid's hut. While the three friends are inside, Ron's pet rat Scabbers begins to behave frantically, and when they leave, the rat escapes, pursued by Hermione's cat Crookshanks. Ron chases Scabbers into the shadow of the Whomping Willow, where a massive black dog—the same animal Harry has seen twice before—drags Ron into a gap in the tree's roots. Harry and Hermione follow, discovering a tunnel that leads to the Shrieking Shack, a supposedly haunted house in Hogsmeade that has been boarded up for years. Inside, they find Ron with a broken leg, and the dog transforms into Sirius Black, who reveals that he is an Animagus and that the entire chase has been a trap to lure Harry to him.

The Confrontation and Revelation

Black, holding Harry's and Hermione's wands, prepares to kill Harry, but Ron and Hermione refuse to abandon him. Harry, consumed by rage over his parents' murder, attacks Black physically, and a chaotic struggle ensues. Remus Lupin bursts into the room, disarms everyone, and to Harry's shock, embraces Black like a brother. Hermione, who has deduced Lupin's lycanthropy, screams that he is a werewolf and has been helping Black. Lupin confirms he is a werewolf but denies aiding Black, explaining that he has been watching the Marauder's Map and saw Black approaching the trio. He then demands to see Scabbers, and Black declares that the rat is not a rat but the wizard Peter Pettigrew, an unregistered Animagus. Lupin reveals that he, Black, Pettigrew, and Harry's father James Potter were the four creators of the Marauder's Map—Moony, Wormtail, Padfoot, and Prongs—and that they became Animagi illegally to keep Lupin company during his werewolf transformations. Black explains that Pettigrew was the Potters' Secret-Keeper, not Black, and that Pettigrew betrayed them to Voldemort, faked his own death by blowing up a street full of Muggles, and has been living as Ron's rat for twelve years. To prove it, Lupin and Black force Pettigrew to transform back into human form, and a cringing, balding man appears, confirming the truth.

The Escape of Pettigrew and the Werewolf Attack

As the group prepares to take Pettigrew back to the castle, Severus Snape arrives, having followed them using the Marauder's Map and the Invisibility Cloak. Snape, believing Black is the murderer, attempts to arrest them all, but Harry, Ron, and Hermione disarm him, knocking him unconscious. Black and Lupin then prepare to kill Pettigrew, but Harry stops them, insisting that his father would not want them to become killers and that Pettigrew should be handed over to the Dementors. As they leave the Shrieking Shack, the full moon emerges, and Lupin, who has not taken his Wolfsbane Potion, transforms into a werewolf. Black transforms into a dog to fight him, and in the chaos, Pettigrew seizes Lupin's wand, stuns Ron, transforms back into a rat, and escapes into the darkness. The werewolf flees into the Forbidden Forest, and Black, wounded, gives chase but is cornered by a hundred Dementors at the edge of the lake.

The Rescue and Aftermath

Harry and Hermione run to Black's aid, but Harry's Patronus Charm fails, and he is overwhelmed by the Dementors, hearing his mother's final screams. Just as a Dementor prepares to administer the Kiss, a powerful silver stag Patronus gallops across the lake and drives the Dementors away. Harry, Black, and Hermione are found unconscious by Snape, who revives and brings them back to the castle. Black is imprisoned in Flitwick's office, and Fudge orders the Dementors to perform the Kiss immediately. Dumbledore, believing Harry and Hermione's account, gives Hermione a Time-Turner, which she has used all year to attend multiple classes. They travel back three hours and, unseen, free Buckbeak from execution, then fly the Hippogriff to the tower window where Black is held, rescuing him. Black and Buckbeak escape into the night, and the Dementors are removed from Hogwarts. The next day, Lupin resigns, his lycanthropy exposed by Snape, and Harry receives a letter from Black, who is in hiding, confirming that he sent the Firebolt and granting Harry permission to visit Hogsmeade.
