The Attack and Its Aftermath

On Halloween night, while the entire school is at the feast, Sirius Black attacks the Fat Lady. He finds her portrait closed and, when she refuses to let him in without the password, he slashes her canvas viciously. The portrait is left with "strips of canvas litter[ing] the floor; great chunks of it had been torn away completely." The Fat Lady herself vanishes, fleeing in terror.
