Learning the GS

Learning the GS
An Unfamiliar Machine
Thobela takes the large demonstration motorcycle despite having ridden only a small Honda. The bike’s weight, speed, and braking challenge him as he enters the highway in darkness.
Skill Through Necessity
He gradually adapts, learning to lean into turns and use the engine’s power. The road becomes more than distance: each acquired skill gives him another chance to resist the pursuit.
The False Roadblock

The False Roadblock
Lights in the Distance
Thobela sees police lights on the N1 and believes the authorities have anticipated his route. He leaves the highway and hides beyond a farm gate, listening and watching from the veld.
A Narrow Reprieve
The lights prove to belong to an accident response rather than a checkpoint. The delay gives him time to think, but it also confirms how quickly a plausible mistake can end his journey.
The Storm Escape

The Storm Escape
Aircraft Overhead
Rooivalk helicopters intercept Thobela and herd him toward the roadblock. He pushes the motorcycle at speed until heavy rain destroys visibility and makes the aircraft’s pursuit dangerous.
A Road Through Mud
He takes the Sneeukraal turn-off, loses control on the wet track, and collides with soldiers. Though the encounter injures one of them, he escapes the roadblock and enters an uncertain network of back roads.
The Griqua Detour

The Griqua Detour
Shelter in the Karoo
Thobela finds an abandoned farmhouse and is discovered by Koos Kok, a travelling Griqua musician. Instead of exposing him, Koos offers food, transport, and a way around the expected checkpoints.
Changing Form
Koos hides the motorcycle beneath furniture in his El Camino and drives him through back roads. The detour turns Thobela from conspicuous motorcyclist into an unseen passenger, frustrating the manhunt’s assumptions.
The Border Crossing

The Border Crossing
Aerial Escape
After the bridge confrontation, Thobela forces an Oryx crew to fly toward Botswana. His wounds and dwindling strength make every decision more difficult, while pursuing helicopters threaten to shoot the aircraft down.
A Journey Continued
He reaches Gaborone and rides on toward Lusaka, only to learn that Miriam and Pakamile are missing. His physical escape has succeeded, but the emotional price changes what the destination means.
