Livingstone Hotel

Heart of the Hunter

The Livingstone Hotel in Gaborone is a temporary refuge and the setting for a decisive discovery: after reaching it battered and exhausted, Thobela Mpayipheli finds that the hard disk he has been carrying is destroyed. The hotel offers him a bed and a pause from the road, but not the recovery of the mission’s crucial cargo.

Arrival in Gaborone

Thobela dismounts from the BMW R 1150 GS outside the hotel barely able to stand. He grips the saddle while stars swim in his vision, bending over the bike until his sight and balance return. Only then does he notice the damage: two neat bullet holes in the right-hand luggage case, which contains his sports bag.

After unclipping the case, he checks the bag and sees two perfectly round holes. He locks his belongings and crosses the pavement into the hotel. The damage is already done before he enters; the hotel is where he first gets the chance to examine its consequences.

A brief place to recover

Inside, the night porter is asleep in his chair. Thobela has to ring the bell with his palm before the groggy man gets up and slides the register across the desk. Thobela fills in his particulars and asks whether the hotel will accept South African rand. The porter checks the amount against what he has written down, hands over a key, and is asleep again before the rattling lift reaches the ground floor and opens for Umzingeli.

The room is large, with a double bed beneath a multicoloured spread and tempting pillows. Thobela’s immediate priorities are practical: shower, dress the wound, eat, drink, and sleep. This sequence makes the hotel a short-lived shelter for a body pushed to its limits, rather than a place where the danger surrounding his journey is resolved.

The destroyed hard disk

Before resting, Thobela empties the sports bag onto the bed to assess the damage. The other contents, including his toilet bag, appear unharmed. Then he picks up the hard disk and sees that it has been destroyed: bullets have struck its centre, where the metal, plastic, and integrated circuits meet. The data is lost for ever, and the loud bang he heard now has an explanation.

The hotel room turns a concealed consequence of the shooting into certain knowledge. The two holes in the luggage case had marked the threat; the broken device reveals its cost. The Livingstone Hotel thus provides shelter only long enough for Thobela to discover that the object he was carrying has failed, a reversal that changes the stakes of his flight without making the hotel itself the source of the damage.
