Nashville
Heated RivalryNashville serves as the setting for a pivotal 2011 All-Star weekend: a place where Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov’s private antagonism is packaged as public spectacle. Its arena stages their head-to-head skills competition, while the surrounding press events show how eagerly the league promotes the rivalry.
The All-Star Weekend
In January 2011, Ilya arrives at his Nashville hotel after dinner with his All-Star team. Pleasantly buzzed, he swipes his key card three times before the door unlocks, then drops onto the king-size bed. The weekend’s team format has separated North American and European players, so Ilya and Shane are not teammates despite playing in the same conference. The league’s interest in their rivalry is no secret.
For Shane, the weekend marks a personal milestone as well as a professional one: he is a rookie and an NHL All-Star. The Skills Competition, held the night before the All-Star Game, gives players a chance to demonstrate their speed and shooting in a comparatively relaxed setting. Yet the league is eager to put Shane and Ilya opposite one another, and schedules them for the shot-accuracy event. The challenge uses four foam bull’s-eye targets fixed to the corners of the goal; players shoot from the blue line, aiming to break all four as quickly as possible. Ilya goes first, against a league record of about seven seconds.
A Stage for the Rivalry
Nashville’s All-Star events make the rivalry visible in more than one arena. Before the competition, Shane is told that he will attend a short press conference with Ilya. The public pairing and the on-ice contest turn their status as rivals into entertainment for the league and its audience. For Shane, the occasion also carries the uncomplicated pride of having reached the All-Star weekend as a rookie, even as the league’s attention makes the encounter feel carefully orchestrated.
A Later Point of Expected Presence
Nashville appears again as a destination in a later team-travel scene. When Shane asks whether Ilya flew separately, he learns that Ilya is not in the city. A teammate adds that Ilya was not injured the previous night, as far as anyone had noticed. The exchange makes Nashville significant in that moment less as a venue than as the place Shane expects Ilya might be—and where he discovers he is not.
