Heated Rivalry

Tampa Bay provides the setting for a rare public break in Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov’s usual opposition: during the 2017 All-Star weekend, they share the ice on the same line. The Florida setting offers poolside and beach leisure between league events, but it does not free them from the pressures of being watched. Their exhilarating play together attracts attention, while Shane remains intent on protecting the rivalry that serves as cover for their relationship.

Setting and All-Star Weekend

The story places Shane in Tampa Bay in January 2017, during an All-Star weekend that gives players time between formal hockey commitments. On Saturday, before the Skills Competition that night, many of them lounge around a pool in the Florida sun or head to the beach. Shane spends part of the afternoon by the pool. The setting thus combines the league’s scheduled spectacle with stretches of informality: the players can gather in resort-like surroundings, but the weekend remains organized around competition and public recognition.

The fans have voted Shane captain of an All-Star team. He is embarrassed by the distinction because, at twenty-five, he is younger than the senior players who would normally receive it. He has captained the Montreal Voyageurs for two and a half seasons and is playing in his sixth All-Star Game, but neither fact makes the honor feel routine. Being chosen over Ilya, however, gives the recognition a private edge: Shane admits to himself that this part of the result feels especially satisfying.

Playing Together

Ilya changes from center to right wing so that he can play on a line with Shane in the All-Star Game. He welcomes the move; he has waited a long time for the chance to play alongside him. The experience exceeds his anticipation. With little time to practice together, they pass as if they can read each other’s thoughts, and Shane can keep pace with Ilya. Ilya is so absorbed in their connection that he feels sorry for their left-wing linemate, Carson: from Ilya’s perspective, nobody else on the ice seems to matter.

Their chemistry makes the game a striking contrast to the rivalry they maintain elsewhere. The line works with an ease Ilya has not experienced with another player, and playing together is exhilarating. After a successful assist, Shane compliments him and gives him a strange look; Ilya responds with an exaggeratedly macho thump on Shane’s back before skating toward the bench. The small, performative gesture lets the two share a moment while keeping their contact legible as ordinary hockey camaraderie.

Public Rivalry and Private Caution

The weekend’s attention also makes it harder for Shane to relax around Ilya. The media is fascinated by the two rivals playing together despite their supposed hatred, and Shane worries that an unguarded touch could reveal something more than competitive chemistry. He tries to keep his distance, both to avoid a telling gesture and to avoid giving reporters material that could alter the public story. The rivalry benefits the league and their careers, but its most important function for Shane is personal: it conceals the truth of their relationship.

The All-Star setting therefore makes closeness possible and risky at once. On the ice, the shared line allows their instinctive understanding to become visible as athletic performance. Away from play, Shane treats the same visibility as a danger. Tampa Bay’s weekend events do not resolve that tension; they concentrate it, placing the pleasure of being together beside the need to control what others can infer.

The Beach and the End of the Weekend

After Sunday night’s game, the players disperse: some go to a Mexican restaurant recommended by a Tampa Bay player, others drink at the hotel bar, and several room parties take place. Shane instead sits alone on the beach in the dark. Other people are still walking in the moonlight, and he recognizes that the beach is part of what draws people to Florida, but he wants an hour or so to himself.

The solitude follows a weekend that has challenged him for several reasons, including the effort to manage his proximity to Ilya and the attention focused on their partnership. Digging his toes into the cool sand, Shane listens to waves he can barely see. The scene contrasts the open shoreline with the enclosed places that dominate his routine—arenas, gyms, hotel rooms, airports, and planes. Tampa Bay is not developed into a detailed portrait of the city; its narrative importance lies in this brief interval of sun, sport, and darkness, where the public spectacle recedes enough for Shane to feel the strain of maintaining the secret.
