Gloucestershire

Henry IV, Part 2

Gloucestershire serves as a rural setting in the play’s later action, most distinctly around Shallow’s house and orchard. Rather than being identified with a battlefield or seat of government, the county frames encounters among Shallow, Silence, and Falstaff, including the recruitment of men and Falstaff’s pointed assessment of his host.

Setting and Scene Locations

The play places a scene before Shallow’s house in Gloucestershire, where Shallow and Silence meet as recruits and household servants enter. Later, Act V returns to Shallow’s house, then places another scene in his orchard. These explicit shifts from the house to the orchard give the location a small but varied domestic geography: Gloucestershire is not merely named as a county, but anchors a sequence of scenes in and around Shallow’s home.

Recruitment and Falstaff’s Judgment

The setting is closely associated with Falstaff’s recruitment of men. As the recruits are led away, Falstaff says he will return to fetch the justices; he also reflects on what he sees as Shallow’s susceptibility to lying. The episode connects the practical business of recruitment with a comic judgment of the local justice. In Gloucestershire, public duty and Falstaff’s opportunism meet within the household setting, where Shallow is both a figure of authority and the object of Falstaff’s private appraisal.

The County Against the Wider Political Story

Gloucestershire’s domestic scenes sit alongside a larger history of reports, remembered alliances, and military reversals. The play recalls the former friendship of Richard II and Northumberland, and Warwick reflects on how individual lives can figure the character of their times. Elsewhere, accounts of the fighting at Shrewsbury and the defeat of Northumberland and Lord Bardolph make political change arrive through reports from elsewhere. Against that unsettled national history, Shallow’s house and orchard provide a localized setting for recruitment and personal dealings. The county’s significance lies in this contrast: the political world presses into the play through news and consequence, while Gloucestershire gives its late scenes a recognizably domestic stage.
