“Hide! Hide!”

Hide and Seek

“Hide! Hide!” is Ronnie McGrath’s frantic command to Tracy, and a warning that leaves its danger unidentified. First shouted as he drives her from the house, the phrase returns in Tracy’s later account to John Rebus; repetition turns it from an alarming order into the central fact she can offer about her fear.

The Cry in the House

Ronnie begins with the single word, “Hide!” He is shrieking, his face drained of colour, when he stumbles toward Tracy at the top of the stairs, grabs her arms, and propels her downstairs with such unfocused force that she fears they will both fall. She cries out and asks whom she is supposed to hide from. Ronnie does not answer the question: he repeats the command and says that they are coming.

The scene makes the word urgent without making its warning clear. Tracy has seen Ronnie strung out before, but never this badly. His hair is damp with sweat despite being described as chilled, and his attention seems to withdraw from her: for a moment he appears almost to recognise her, then looks away into a distance of his own. When he says the warning again, his voice has fallen to a whisper. The change in volume does not resolve the threat; it makes the same command feel more intimate and more unsettling.

A Command That Forces Tracy Out

Ronnie pushes Tracy all the way to the front door. The physical movement gives “Hide!” an immediate consequence: she is not merely hearing a frightened man’s words but being forced out of the house while he repeats them. Tracy says that he is scaring her. She also knows that a fix might help him and that he has what he needs in his bedroom, but the scene does not show her administering it or explain what Ronnie believes is coming.

The abruptness of the command overturns the ordinary concern occupying Tracy only minutes earlier: whether to risk a trip to the squat’s seething lavatory. That mundane decision gives way to a danger she cannot identify. Ronnie’s repeated insistence supplies no name, face, or explanation for the people he says are coming, so the phrase’s menace rests on the gap between his certainty and Tracy’s confusion.

The Warning Recalled

Later, Tracy tells John Rebus over the telephone that Ronnie said she should hide. Rebus hears her crying and sniffing back tears; as he listens, he visualises a frightened little girl, just out of school, standing in a distant callbox. He offers to fetch her in his car and asks where she is, but Tracy refuses. Her recollection preserves the repetition—Ronnie had said it over and over—without adding an explanation of whom he feared.

The phrase therefore links Ronnie’s last alarming encounter with Tracy’s later attempt to make contact with Rebus. In the house, “Hide!” is an order delivered through physical force; on the telephone, it is the remembered reason Tracy gives for her fear. The warning remains unresolved in these moments: what matters is not that its threat has been identified, but that Ronnie’s repeated words have driven Tracy out and stayed with her afterward.
