John Rebus—Rhona
Hide and SeekJohn Rebus—Rhona is a strained, largely distant relationship between spouses living apart. Its continuing force is felt through their daughter Samantha: separation has made family correspondence falter, while Rebus’s concern about Rhona hearing personal news shapes what he is willing to tell their daughter.
Separation and Family Distance
Rhona has taken Samantha to live in London, leaving Rebus apart from both his wife and daughter. On his drive back to the station, he tries to imagine a group photograph of the three of them but cannot picture it. The failed image gives concrete form to the distance between them: they have grown far apart since Rhona and Samantha left.
Correspondence Through Samantha
Samantha still writes to Rebus, but he is slow to reply. She takes umbrage at his delays and writes less and less, so their connection persists in letters while steadily weakening. In her most recent letter, she expresses hope that Gill Templer and Rebus are happy together, an assumption that becomes difficult for him to address.
Rhona and Rebus’s Silence
Rebus does not tell Samantha that Gill has left him, although he says telling Samantha itself would have been fine. What he cannot bear is the possibility that Rhona will hear about the breakup. The distinction reveals that his silence is bound up not simply with communicating the end of his relationship with Gill, but with Rhona’s knowledge of it. He privately counts Gill’s departure as another failed relationship, while the marriage’s separation continues to shape how he manages news within the family.
