John Rebus—Samantha

Hide and Seek

John Rebus—Samantha is a father-daughter relationship marked by separation and dwindling correspondence. Samantha lives in London with her mother, Rhona, while Rebus remains in Edinburgh; his slow replies help widen a distance he cannot imagine repairing through a simple family photograph.

Family Distance

Rebus thinks about how a photograph of himself, Rhona, and Samantha might look, but cannot picture the three of them together. Rhona has taken Samantha to live in London, and although Samantha still writes, Rebus is slow to answer. She takes offence at his delays and writes less and less. Their separation is therefore not only geographical: the correspondence that might bridge it is gradually thinning.

What Rebus Does Not Tell Her

In Samantha’s most recent letter, she hopes that Rebus and Gill Templer are happy. Rebus knows this is no longer true: Gill left him several months earlier. He could tell Samantha about the breakup, but cannot bear the thought of Rhona hearing about it. The silence reflects his discomfort with another failed relationship, which he thinks of as another notch in his record of romantic failure. Samantha’s letter reaches him across the distance, but his answer is constrained by the past and by what he fears Rhona will learn.

Samantha’s Echo in Tracy

Rebus’s association with his daughter resurfaces when he drives Tracy back toward Pilmuir. After giving Tracy ten pounds, he recognizes that the money has become more than practical help: it creates a bond he feels he should not be making. As Tracy walks away, fragile in appearance but determined in her gait, she reminds him sometimes of Samantha and at other times of Gill. The comparison places his strained family attachment alongside his former intimacy with Gill, while showing how readily care for Tracy becomes entangled with people absent from his daily life.
