Nell and Holmes’s relationship rules

Hide and Seek

Nell and Holmes’s relationship rules are the explicit terms by which Nell Stapleton and Brian Holmes shape their romantic partnership: they set aside marriage, children, and living together, while insisting on fidelity and openness. The rules make their intimacy neither conventional nor casual, and Rule Seven becomes a direct test of whether their agreement can withstand secrecy.

Terms of the Relationship

Nell Stapleton and Brian Holmes live by a short set of mutually understood restrictions. They do not talk about marriage, contemplate having children, or hint at moving in together; cheating is also ruled out. These boundaries coexist with a strong attachment: they love one another and appear comfortable together both in public and in private. Their arrangement thus separates affection from the conventional milestones that might otherwise be expected to define a couple’s future.

Their differences are presented as complementary rather than as a contest. Nell is better at the Guardian cryptic crossword and at finding her way through difficult books; Holmes is better with arithmetic and remembering names. The narration describes them as more intelligent than one another in different ways, a balance consistent with the rules’ character as an arrangement they share rather than a set of demands imposed by one partner.

Rule Seven and the Briefcase

The most pointedly demonstrated rule is Rule Seven: no secrets. At The Bridge of Sighs, Nell closes Holmes’s briefcase after seeing a photograph inside. Holmes, returning to their table with drinks, asks frostily who gave her permission to open it. Nell answers by invoking Rule Seven, turning their shared agreement into a response to his immediate rebuke. Her appeal does not erase his irritation, but it makes clear that, for her, openness is part of the relationship’s terms, not merely a courtesy he may suspend when a case is involved.

The moment also places the rule under pressure. Holmes says the photograph is part of a case he is working on, so professional confidentiality and the couple’s expectation of no secrets meet in the same exchange. The scene establishes the tension without resolving it: Nell has seen something he treats as private, and he has not yet explained the image. Her reminder asserts the rule; his response shows that applying it is not effortless.

Meaning and Limits

The rules provide a structure for a relationship that is affectionate but deliberately avoids promises about marriage, parenthood, and a shared home. Fidelity is stated alongside those refusals, making clear that their rejection of conventional commitments does not mean an absence of obligations to each other. Rule Seven adds a different kind of commitment: the demand for openness, brought into focus when Holmes’s work gives him a reason to withhold information.

The evidence shows the couple’s rules in ordinary life as well as in that moment of friction. Holmes asks Nell, a librarian at the University of Edinburgh, to find books and scholarly materials on the occult; she locates theses and prepares a printed bibliography, then hands it to him when they meet at the pub. Their partnership includes practical reliance and shared time, while the briefcase exchange exposes a limit to easy trust. The rules therefore function both as boundaries around the life they have chosen and as a standard against which their conduct can be tested.
