Tracy assaults Nell Stapleton at the library

Hide and Seek

Tracy’s assault on Nell Stapleton at the University of Edinburgh library turns an attempt to enter the building into a violent confrontation and gives John Rebus a new lead in tracing Tracy’s movements. Nell’s recognition of her from a photograph links the attack to an earlier encounter involving Brian Holmes.

The confrontation

Nell was sorting request forms when a guard stopped Tracy at the library entrance because she had no identification. Nell noticed that Tracy appeared distressed and was acting unlike a student seeking entry. When Nell approached, she offered to pass a message to someone inside, but Tracy insisted on getting into the building. Nell refused, and Tracy struck her in the face, knocking her down and leaving her unconscious. Tracy then ran from the library. The guard turned from the fleeing woman to help Nell.

Recognition and the investigative trail

At the hospital, Nell could not speak comfortably, so she wrote out her account for Rebus. She identified the attacker as the woman in the nude photograph that Brian Holmes had carried in his briefcase the previous night at the pub, where Rebus had also been present. The photograph made Nell’s recognition more than a detail of description: it connected the assault to an image already circulating among the investigators and gave Rebus a way to trace Tracy’s movements.

Holmes arrived anxious and exhausted after the drive, and Rebus reassured him that Nell was being kept overnight and had suffered a broken nose, without concussion or blurred vision. Nell’s written account also challenged the idea that the attack was simply an encounter with an enraged stranger. She had approached Tracy in an effort to help, but Tracy had interpreted the intervention as an obstacle. Rebus read the assault as part of a trail of disorder left by Tracy and wondered whether she had lost control or had a specific reason for trying to enter the library.

The library’s broken order

The encounter also exposes how far ordinary procedures fail to contain Tracy’s urgency. At Edinburgh University Library, access is governed by identification and the guard’s routine authority; Nell approaches expecting that a calm offer to pass a message will resolve the dispute. But the guard is visibly out of his depth, and Nell’s attempt to take charge does not restore order. The scene turns on that mismatch: a familiar institutional exchange becomes a confrontation because Tracy treats every barrier as something to overcome, while the people trying to manage her assume ordinary rules of conduct still apply.

Significance for the investigation

The assault leaves Rebus with a question rather than an explanation. Tracy’s attempt to enter the library may have been a moment of lost control, or she may have had a specific reason for going there; Nell’s account establishes the urgency of her effort but cannot resolve its purpose. Rebus sees the incident as another trace of disorder in Tracy’s wake, making her movements something to follow rather than an isolated outburst to set aside.

That uncertainty interrupts the routine Rebus had expected. He was meant to be between cases, finishing up before beginning full-time work on the drugs campaign, but the attack draws him back into active inquiry. Its importance lies not only in the harm done to Nell, but in the way Tracy’s unexplained urgency turns an ordinary library entrance into a new point of investigation.
