University of London

Hide and Seek

The University of London appears in the novel through Brian Holmes’s eight-month course of study in History, an experience that ends with his departure from London and return north. Rather than detailing the university’s organization, the narrative uses Holmes’s changing relationship to student life to mark a short-lived alternative to the police career he eventually chooses.

Holmes’s History studies

Holmes spends eight months studying History at the University of London. His first month is dominated by the scale of London and the practical challenge of living and travelling there. During the second and third months, his attention shifts to university life: new friends, discussion, argument, and the possibility of joining different groups. He approaches those openings cautiously, testing the atmosphere before taking part.

From student life to isolation

By the fourth and fifth months, Holmes has settled into a London routine, commuting each day from his lodgings in Battersea. The account emphasizes how thoroughly that routine becomes governed by transport times and connections. Missing a train becomes a source of acute frustration, while the rush-hour Tube and the prospect of late buses and trains shape the rhythm of his days.

That outward adaptation does not last. In his sixth and seventh months, Holmes becomes isolated in Battersea, studying from his room and hardly attending lectures. The progression from tentative social participation to withdrawal makes his university experience less a straightforward preparation for a career than a brief, increasingly solitary chapter.

Departure and narrative significance

In May, the eighth month of his studies, Holmes leaves London and returns north. The return brings him back to old friends, but also leaves an emptiness that he feels must be filled by work. His decision to join the police follows this departure, making the University of London a point of contrast in his life: a possible academic path that he tried for a limited time, then abandoned as he sought a different direction.
