Williams College
Hold TightWilliams College is a formative setting in Nash’s story: he studied philosophy there, and during his sophomore year he met Cassandra, whose love altered the course of his life. The college later remained a place the couple returned to for homecomings and reunions, linking Nash’s student years to his memories of their life together.
Nash’s Studies
Nash matriculated at Williams College after distinguishing himself as a highly intelligent student, with straight-A grades and nearly perfect SAT scores. He majored in philosophy while trying to keep his violent impulses under control. His time at the college thus belongs to a period in which he both pursued an ordinary future and struggled with a capacity for harming others.
Meeting Cassandra
Nash and Cassandra met during their sophomore year at Williams. He understood their meeting as a turning point: through Cassandra, he came to grasp love, hope, and the desire to build a life with another person. Williams is consequently more than a marker of Nash’s education; it is the setting for the relationship that briefly gave his life a different direction.
Returns and Memory
After college, Nash and Cassandra returned to Williams for homecomings and reunions, staying in North Adams at the Porches Inn. In his later recollection, the college’s reunions are connected to an intimate memory of their life together. That remembered closeness stands in sharp contrast to the loss that followed Cassandra’s illness and death, after which Nash stopped trying to restrain his violent impulses. Williams therefore frames both the beginning of their shared life and the memories against which Nash’s later despair is measured.
