Yasmin’s Leak of the Lewiston Video

Hold Tight

Yasmin’s leak of the Lewiston video is a retaliatory act rooted in the humiliation and bullying that drove her out of school activities. Revealed through Jill’s later account, it also exposes how the girls’ secret surveillance of adults became a way to answer an injury they felt adults had failed to address.

Background: A humiliation that lingered

Joe Lewiston, Yasmin’s teacher, made an inappropriate comment about her facial hair. He apologized immediately, but the apology did not undo the damage: classmates began calling her “XY” or “Y,” turning the remark into a continuing taunt. Yasmin stopped dance and, in effect, nearly all activity. Jill remained her friend and worked to keep her included, even as Yasmin withdrew.

The video leak grew out of this worsening isolation. Jill later described Yasmin as first becoming very sad and then intensely angry. She thought Yasmin saw the situation as a chance to help herself after years of feeling that her mother, Marianne Gillespie, had been useless. That is Jill’s interpretation of Yasmin’s state of mind, not a motive Yasmin explains directly in the account.

Discovery and retaliation

Yasmin and Jill were spying on adults, treating the discoveries as a game in which grown-ups concealed information and the girls uncovered it. In that process, they saw the video on Marianne’s camera phone. Yasmin asked her mother about it; Marianne said the matter was over and that Joe Lewiston was suffering too. The exchange gave Yasmin knowledge of the video but did not persuade her to leave the matter alone.

On the same day as Jill’s separate email, Yasmin sent out the video to make Joe Lewiston pay for what he had done. The account establishes the act and its retaliatory purpose, but does not specify how widely the video circulated or what immediate consequences followed for him. The leak turns private knowledge into an instrument of punishment: Yasmin uses material discovered through spying to answer the public shame inflicted on her at school.

The girls’ joint plan

The leak was coordinated with Jill’s own action, though their aims were distinct. The girls did not go to Yasmin’s house after school; they went somewhere else first. Jill sent an email about a party to get an adult to act, while Yasmin sent the video against Joe Lewiston. Their actions unfolded on the same day, as a response to the bullying Yasmin had endured and, in Jill’s words, to adults deciding what was best for them and children picking on her.

Jill insisted that they had not meant to cause harm and described what they did as sending a couple of emails. Yet the contrast between that minimizing description and Yasmin’s stated aim of making Joe Lewiston pay gives the incident its tension: the girls understand themselves as pushing back, while their chosen means carry consequences beyond the private game of discovery.

Significance

When Jill recounts the plan to Tia, Tia considers the example set by adults: children may not do what their parents say, but they do what they see their parents do. Her uncertainty about blame places the leak within a wider pattern of secrecy, surveillance, and retaliation rather than treating it as an isolated prank. The video is both evidence of Marianne’s concealed conduct and a weapon Yasmin repurposes after her own humiliation; its circulation marks the point where the girls’ private investigation becomes an act intended to punish.
