The Search Takes Shape
A second project
In London, St. Ives is preparing his own spacecraft while seeking the alien craft’s whereabouts. Kraken’s rumor that it may be hidden in one of Kelso Drake’s West End brothels gives him a risky lead.
Competing priorities
St. Ives regards science as his chief responsibility, but each new clue ties the search to the city’s criminal plots. His investigation becomes difficult to separate from the danger surrounding his friends.
The Landing on the Heath

The Search Reaches Its Goal
Two vessels converge
St. Ives reaches Hampstead Heath in the alien spacecraft he has taken from Drake’s house. Birdlip’s dirigible arrives soon after, drawing the Royal Academy, the crowds, and the villains toward the same patch of ground.
Discovery and departure
The released Homunculus boards St. Ives’s vessel with Birdlip, and the pair depart for the stars. St. Ives’s quest ends not with possession of the craft, but with a witnessed voyage and a new understanding of its purpose.
