A Corrupt Partnership

The Doctor’s Influence
A dangerous collaborator
Narbondo encourages Sebastian’s research and exploits his contact with the Homunculus. Their cooperation gives the doctor access to experiments that cross moral boundaries.
Ambition without loyalty
Narbondo’s interest lies in power, not fellowship. Sebastian’s collapse and Nell’s escape leave him determined to recover the box and the knowledge it represents.
The Corpse Laboratory

Life as an Experiment
A grisly technique
Narbondo uses carp glands and chemical apparatus to animate the dead. His laboratory fills with corpses, captive specimens, and failed results, while Shiloh hopes to exploit the work for religious spectacle.
Control proves fragile
The bodies are damaged, erratic, and dependent on Narbondo’s procedures. His method offers the appearance of mastery over death but also creates dangers he cannot reliably govern.
Flight from the Laboratory

The Doctor Escapes
A ruined operation
Narbondo’s laboratory is disrupted by Kraken, Hasbro, and the outbreak of reanimated corpses. Pule’s bomb does not kill him, but the blast and pursuit make the room untenable.
Power turns to flight
Narbondo escapes over the rooftops with his bags, abandoning the illusion that his carefully arranged cabinet is secure. By the epilogue he has Pule in his custody, but the novel leaves his future uncertain.
