A Hidden Inheritance

A Legacy in Hiding
Safeguarding the jewel
Sebastian Owlesby’s emerald is hidden in a Keeble box and kept secret from those who might exploit it. The jewel is intended as Jack Owlesby’s inheritance, giving the box a family significance beyond its apparent mechanical curiosities.
Two boxes, one danger
The existence of a second, similar box makes identification treacherous. The characters’ uncertainty about which box contains the emerald and which the Homunculus repeatedly gives villains an opening.
Kraken Takes the Box

A Theft Born of Confusion
A hidden chest opened
While the club focuses on Drake, Bill Kraken discovers a box concealed in Captain Powers’ sea chest and slips away with it. His drunken curiosity and shame cloud his judgment about what he has taken.
A prize changes hands
Willis Pule tricks Kraken into revealing that the box holds the emerald, but Narbondo intervenes and takes control of both men. The jewel becomes a bargaining chip in a contest Kraken scarcely understands.
Inheritance Restored

The Jewel Comes Home
Recovery amid the crowd
After the Heath’s struggles, Jack and his allies recover the box containing the emerald. Its value lies not only in its size but in its return to the people for whom Sebastian intended it.
A future secured
The recovered inheritance offers Jack and Dorothy a measure of independence. Against the spectacle of lost airships and departing wonders, the jewel gives the human story a practical, settled conclusion.
