The First Theft

A Box Vanishes
A moment of distraction
As Drake confronts the club, Kraken steals a box from Captain Powers’s sea chest. The theft is not initially understood by the others, leaving them unsure who has taken the object.
Suspicion multiplies
The club’s uncertainty allows other characters to claim or pursue similar boxes. Each object may hold a jewel, a mechanism, or the Homunculus, so the act creates danger beyond the value of the item itself.
Shifting Possession

A Chain of Transfers
Theft and deception
Kraken’s box passes into the struggle between Narbondo and Pule. Another box is stolen on a train, while Drake’s men pursue the objects through his house and the streets.
No reliable identification
Because Keeble’s boxes resemble one another, possession does not guarantee knowledge. The characters repeatedly act on uncertain assumptions, and that confusion gives the villains time to change their plans.
The Heath Contest

A Prize in the Open
Rivals collide
Drake, Pule, Godall, Jack, and Shiloh all converge on the boxes as the crowd surges around Birdlip’s dirigible. The contest becomes physical and public.
Unintended release
The struggle frees the Homunculus and enables Birdlip’s departure. The conflict ends because the most coveted prize escapes human ownership, while Jack’s emerald is ultimately recovered.
