A Temporary Departure

Leaving the City
A scientist chooses his work
St. Ives plans to return to Harrogate and finish preparations for his spacecraft. He believes the club can manage the London intrigues without him for a short time.
An uneasy separation
His departure is meant to restore focus, but he remains concerned about Drake, Narbondo, and the approaching dirigible. His confidence that distance will simplify the problem proves misplaced.
Pule Follows the Trail

The Pursuit Reaches the Manor
A search for the manuscript
Pule breaks into St. Ives’s study, searching for Sebastian’s papers. Hasbro catches him, and he escapes through the grounds toward the River Nidd.
A diversion with consequences
St. Ives and Hasbro pursue him, leaving the manor less protected. Deener exploits the opening to enter the silo, turning the chase into the cause of a much larger disaster.
The Train Encounter

Pursuer and Adversary
A chance recognition
Pule boards the same train as St. Ives, trying to remain hidden. When a vendor recognizes his bandaged face, the disguise collapses.
Flight brings another theft
Pule escapes through the train cars and jumps into the countryside, taking a box from a passenger. The incident carries the Harrogate conflict back toward London and adds another uncertain object to the struggle.
