A Creature Kept Alive

A Living Secret
Power behind a barrier
The Homunculus can affect life, decay, and motion, but it must remain in a box that allows it to breathe. Its confinement protects others from an uncontrolled encounter while also preventing the being from escaping.
Knowledge at a cost
Sebastian’s dealings with the creature feed his pursuit of power and contribute to his ruin. The box becomes the material focus of a dangerous belief: that its occupant can grant mastery over death and time.
Boxes Mistaken

A Confusion of Containers
Similar workmanship
Keeble’s boxes look alike, though they contain very different things: the Homunculus, the emerald, or a mechanism. The characters’ inability to tell them apart turns ordinary handling into high-stakes uncertainty.
A shifting advantage
Kraken, Pule, Shiloh, Drake, and the investigators successively possess or pursue boxes. Each transfer alters who can bargain, deceive, or interfere, while no one is certain that the prize is the one they think it is.
Freedom at Last

The Prison Opens
A destructive choice
Pule smashes a Keeble box, and the Homunculus emerges. The break destroys the barrier that has defined its existence for generations but does not leave it helpless or directionless.
A chosen companion
The tiny being reaches Birdlip and enters his skeletal ribcage, restoring the pilot’s movement. Together they board the alien craft and leave Earth, turning the box’s destruction into a liberation rather than a catastrophe.
