A Man of Many Trades

Kraken’s Unsteady Life
A familiar outsider
Bill Kraken works as a street vendor and survives by improvisation, drink, and a patchwork of half-understood scientific ideas. His stories are comic, but his memories of Sebastian’s experiments carry real horror.
A useful informant
Kraken gives St. Ives a lead connecting Drake to the missing craft. He wants to help, yet his dependence on drink and his precarious place among London’s poor make him easy to manipulate.
The Theft and Betrayal

A Weak Moment
The hidden box
While others are distracted, Kraken opens Powers’s sea chest and steals a Keeble box. He is unsure what it contains, but the act violates the trust of the people who sheltered him.
A compromised choice
Pule exploits Kraken’s shame and thirst, then Narbondo takes control of him. Kraken’s attempt to recover his footing instead pulls him into a criminal struggle over the emerald and the Homunculus.
A Fright That Clears the Fog

Fear and Recovery
The ghouls appear
Kraken is trapped among reanimated corpses in the secret passage beneath the laboratory. The ghastly spectacle pushes his shaken mind toward panic, but the shock also breaks through the fog that has clouded him since his beating.
Returning to his friends
He escapes and reaches the Keebles and St. Ives, admits that he lost the box, and offers information about Dorothy. His return does not erase his betrayal, but it gives him a way to act loyally again.
