Le Club

I Know This Much Is True

Le Club is the dance club Leo managed before it went out of business. Its brief place in the narrative links a failing enterprise to Leo’s cocaine use and to the damage that followed in his working and family life.

The Club and Its Owner

The club belonged to Rik, a wealthy young man from Fairfield whose cocaine use had drawn Leo into using the drug. Le Club is presented through Dominick’s recollection as the setting for one of the periods when his friendship with Leo fell away: Dominick could not accept Leo’s drug use, his stunts, or the way he treated Angie.

Collapse and Leo’s Dismissal

Le Club’s financial trouble came to a head when Rik’s father sent an accountant to examine his son’s books. Leo was soon fired. The club’s failure therefore marked a turn in Leo’s circumstances: his job ended as scrutiny of the owner’s accounts exposed the business’s problems, while his drug use had already strained his friendships and marriage.

Consequences Beyond the Club

After Leo entered drug rehabilitation, which Angie’s family financed, it emerged that he had got one of Le Club’s hostesses, Tina, pregnant; she had already had an abortion before telling Angie about it. Angie separated from Leo and moved with Shannon back to her parents’ home. Three months after Leo left treatment, Angie and Leo were expecting another child. Her father, Diogenes Constantine, had been pressing for a divorce, but Angie asked him to give Leo a job at the dealership, arguing that Leo had changed and was a good father. Le Club’s closure thus remains part of a larger sequence of loss and attempted repair: the club disappears from the story, but the consequences of Leo’s time there continue within his family.
