Akron
I'm Still HereAkron is both a family home and a childhood meeting place in Austin’s account: her father was raised there, and it was the city where her cousin Dalin’s family lived. A Christmas gathering in the house brings distant branches of the family together and becomes the setting for a formative encounter with the vulnerability behind Dalin’s confident manner.
Family Geography
Dalin and Austin were first cousins, but their childhoods unfolded at a distance. Dalin was a confident sixteen-year-old when Austin was eight and shy; his family lived in Akron, while hers lived in Toledo. They moved through overlapping family circles without often occupying the same space. Akron therefore marks not only where Dalin lived but also one side of the geographic and emotional distance between the cousins.
The Christmas Gathering
During Christmas break, aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends crowded into the warm, creaky Akron house where Austin’s father had grown up. While the adults gathered in the kitchen, Austin slipped upstairs to her grandmother’s room. She sat on the floor beside her grandmother, who was watching a twenty-inch tube television with a long antenna, and enjoyed having her company to herself.
The quiet broke when the front door slammed and voices rose downstairs. Austin and her grandmother caught only fragments of the argument, but the word gun stood out. Dalin came upstairs, visibly shaken, and explained that after buying new sneakers he and his friends had been held at gunpoint; because they carried no weapons, he had handed over the bright white shoes. He said he intended to find a gun and get them back. The gathering’s crowded family warmth thus gave way to a moment in which the cousins saw the danger that had entered Dalin’s night.
Place and Significance
The episode makes the Akron house a place where family members witness both Dalin’s distress and the anger he directs toward recovering control. Austin understands that his response is about more than the shoes: the robbery has challenged his sense of dignity and safety, as well as taken something he had just paid for. The childhood scene connects the cousins across the distance between Akron and Toledo, revealing a side of Dalin that Austin’s earlier image of him as cool and self-assured had kept out of reach.
