Mountjoy Prison

In the Woods

Mountjoy Prison is the Dublin prison holding Shane after an armed petrol-station robbery, and the site of Rob Ryan’s unsuccessful effort to question him about events linked to Knocknaree. Its importance in the investigation is concentrated in a single evening visit: Rob enters hoping to extract information, but leaves with Shane’s denials intact and no new lead.

Shane’s Imprisonment

Mrs. Fitzgerald identifies Mountjoy Prison as Shane’s home after he and another man robbed a petrol station with a knife, frightening the young employee working there. She recounts the crime with disapproval, while also repeating Shane’s mother’s view that he was not a bad lad but was easily led. The account establishes the immediate reason for his confinement and offers a local, qualified portrait of him before Rob confronts him.

Rob Ryan’s Visit

That evening, Rob goes to Mountjoy Prison alone. He tries several tactics and offers Shane immunity and early release on the armed-robbery sentence, relying on the hope that Shane will not know what Rob can actually promise. Shane remains fixed on the only response he seems willing to give: he knows nothing, and Rob cannot prove otherwise. Rob questions him about Sandra, the rape, Peter and Jamie, and Jonathan Devlin, but Shane denies knowing what Rob is talking about each time. Rob finally gives up when his frustration threatens to make him throw something.

Role in the Investigation

The prison visit turns a possible lead into a dead end. Rob’s attempt to use the leverage of Shane’s sentence produces neither a confession nor a verifiable account, and the encounter exposes the limits of pressure when the suspect will not engage with the questions. On his way home, Rob calls Cassie Maddox; she has independently eliminated Sandra Scully as a suspect by confirming that Sandra was working at a call center in town on the night in question. That finding tidies up one branch of the inquiry, but it does not make Shane’s refusal any more informative.
