Adrienne–Paul relationship

Insatiable Box Set: Books 1-4

The Adrienne–Paul relationship is an engagement built over a concealed injury and broken by Adrienne’s refusal to let Paul or her parents decide what her life should become. Paul was not one of the men who assaulted her, but his drunken absence, delay in getting her medical care, and later role in suppressing an investigation made him part of the betrayal. The relationship’s decisive end comes when Adrienne returns to her parents’ house with Drayton, confronts Paul and her family, and leaves without accepting the marriage they had arranged for her.

Engagement and the concealed assault

A year before Adrienne returns home, Paul is in the spare bedroom of the apartment they share when two or perhaps three of his fraternity brothers enter her bedroom drunk and assault her. Adrienne cannot remember their names or faces, but remembers their voices. The assault becomes difficult for her to describe, even to Wilder later; at the time, she and Paul call it an incident, a minimizing description that obscures both the violence and its lasting consequences.

Paul has passed out while the assault takes place. He eventually wakes and takes Adrienne to the hospital, but only after hours of delay. There, a doctor tells her and her parents that she will never be able to have children. Paul then insists that they should not speak of what happened again and says he will marry her that June. Their engagement thus becomes entangled with a trauma that Paul urges her to keep silent about, rather than a future she has freely chosen.

The marriage arranged around silence

Paul and Adrienne’s parents agree that she should marry him, in part because the assailants’ families are rich and powerful. Paul convinces her parents that naming his friends as the perpetrators could ruin Adrienne’s life as well as theirs. Her parents accept this argument and help arrange the marriage, while Adrienne’s wishes and testimony are pushed aside. The plan presents marriage as a way to contain the consequences of the assault: Adrienne is expected to marry a man she does not love, keep quiet, and live with the prospect of being childless.

The arrangement is not simply a broken romance. It makes Paul’s promised marriage part of the mechanism that keeps the assault unexamined. Adrienne later recalls that he and her parents wanted to avoid making waves because of the men’s wealth and influence. The engagement therefore represents a future negotiated by others under pressure, not a repaired bond between the couple. Its promise of security cannot erase Paul’s failure to protect her, his delay in seeking care, or his participation in silencing her.

Adrienne’s return and refusal

Almost a year after she has been away, Adrienne travels with Drayton to the modern ranch house where Paul and her parents are. The journey brings the old arrangement into the present: her hands tremble as they approach, but when Paul appears at the door and asks why she is there, she answers that it is her house and challenges him to explain his own presence. Her response marks a change from the intimidation she had felt around him before. She is no longer returning as the fiancée expected to comply with the wedding plan.

Adrienne’s mother embraces her and says that the family has been looking for her and thought she was dead. The reunion turns immediately toward the questions her pregnancy raises. When Paul asks Drayton whether Adrienne has told him what happened, Drayton says that he knows about Paul’s drunkenness, his failure to protect her from his friends, and the marriage arranged against her wishes. He makes clear that he will respect Adrienne’s choice about whether she wants contact with her parents. Paul’s role in the old relationship is now being named in front of him rather than hidden for his protection or that of his friends.

When Paul tries to take Adrienne’s hand, she refuses his touch and tells him that she despises him. Her mother tries to restore the old arrangement, calling herself Paul’s future mother-in-law and insisting that Adrienne will come back to him. She also denies that Adrienne is pregnant, treating her former diagnosis of infertility as proof that the pregnancy cannot be real. Adrienne rejects both the denial and the assumption that the wedding remains inevitable. She tells her family that their support of Paul makes them part of the conspiracy, says she is not coming back, and tells Paul to forget the wedding invitation before leaving with Drayton.

The past’s continuing presence

The assault continues to shape how the relationship is understood after the engagement ends. On a later hotel visit with Drayton, Adrienne recognizes one of the men by his voice. She has never forgotten it. When she explains the assault to Drayton and the Samsa brothers, she distinguishes what she remembers clearly—the voices—from the faces she could not identify. Her account restores a nameable history to what Paul had wanted to leave unspoken.

Paul later appears in a room with Adrienne, Wilder, Lycell, and one of the men who identifies himself as a fraternity brother. Paul has a smirk as Adrienne recognizes the visitor; she begins shaking and says that she feels sick. The scene links the former engagement to the social circle that enabled the assault and shows that its aftermath is not confined to Adrienne’s memories of the hospital or the abandoned wedding plan. Her bodily distress makes the old harm present again, while the others recognize that something is wrong.

Adrienne’s eventual rejection of Paul is therefore more than a change of partner. She refuses the marriage that was offered as a substitute for justice and rejects the family’s claim that an earlier agreement still governs her. Her pregnancy also overturns the future Paul and her parents had treated as settled: the diagnosis of infertility no longer defines what she can expect, and the planned childless marriage no longer supplies the terms of her life. The relationship ends with Adrienne asserting that the decision belongs to her, not to Paul or the people who arranged the engagement.
