First Glimpses of Auras

The World Beyond Sight A Sudden Vision After a conversation with pharmacist Joe Wyzer about hyper-reality, Ralph steps out of the Rite Aid and is overwhelmed by a vision of auras surrounding every person and object. People are wrapped in colored envelopes of light; balloon-strings rise from their heads; the telephone wires pulse with jagged yellow spirals. The world becomes a fiercely glowing wonderland, beautiful and terrifying. Learning to See Ralph discovers that the auras come and go, like radio stations at night. He learns that he can sometimes will them into being, and that they reveal hidden truths: the health of a person, their emotions, even their secrets. He sees a mother and son whose auras twine together like woodbine, and a young man whose dark aura signals impending death. The experience is both exhilarating and frightening. The First Bald Doctor Later that same day, Ralph sees two short, bald men in white smocks coming out of May Locher's house in the dead of night. One carries a pair of scissors. At first he thinks they are aliens or hallucinations, but he soon realizes they are something far stranger: beings from another level of reality, the so-called little bald doctors who oversee the deaths of Short-Timers.

Meeting Clotho and Lachesis

The Bald Doctors Reveal Themselves A Summons to the Roof After the attack on High Ridge, Ralph and Lois follow the trail of Atropos to Derry Home Hospital, where they find Clotho and Lachesis waiting in Jimmy Vandermeer's room. The two little bald doctors introduce themselves as agents of Death who serve the Purpose. They explain that they cut the life-cords of those whose time has come, doing so with love and respect. The Purpose and the Random Clotho and Lachesis describe the four constants: Life, Death, the Purpose, and the Random. They explain that most deaths serve the Purpose – they are expected, even welcomed. But Atropos, their rogue counterpart, serves the Random, cutting cords for his own amusement and taking souvenirs. They reveal that Ed Deepneau's life-cord has been cut by Atropos, making him an undesignated agent of chaos. The Mission The bald doctors charge Ralph and Lois with stopping Ed Deepneau from assassinating Susan Day and killing thousands at the Civic Center. They warn that Atropos and the forces behind him – including an entity Ed calls the Crimson King – are immensely powerful. Ralph and Lois must use their newfound abilities to intervene, but they cannot approach Ed or Atropos directly.

The Final Ascent

The Last Journey Upward Returning to the Higher Levels In his final moments, Ralph experiences one last ascent through the levels of perception. He sees the world in all its brilliant, hidden glory – the auras of the people on Harris Avenue, the deathbag surrounding the green Ford, and the grinning figure of Atropos waiting on the sidewalk. He understands that he has become a pivot-point in the struggle between Purpose and Random. The Promise Fulfilled Ralph dives back down to the Short-Time level to push Natalie out of the path of the car. As he is struck, he feels no pain, only a sense of completion. He sees Clotho and Lachesis appear beside him, and they shake his hand one last time. The scar on his arm – the mark of his promise – fades away as he passes into the next world. A Vision of Light In his final seconds, Ralph shares a vision with Lois: a dark barn split by brilliant seams of light, representing the universe where dazzling light exists behind the darkness. He dies with a smile, having fulfilled his word and saved the child.
