The Purpose and the Random

The Purpose and the Random are the two fundamental cosmic forces that govern all events in the universe of Insomnia, as revealed to Ralph Roberts and Lois Chasse by the Long-Time beings Clotho and Lachesis. These forces are not equal in measure; life is predominantly shaped by design, with chance playing a smaller but crucial role. This binary framework structures the novel's entire metaphysical conflict, with the protagonists caught between these forces and ultimately tasked with preserving a single undesignated life that could tip the cosmic balance.

Definition and Cosmic Role

Clotho and Lachesis explain that there are only four constants in the area of existence where Short-Time lives and Long-Time lives overlap: Life, Death, the Purpose, and the Random. The Purpose and the Random are the two active, opposing principles that determine the course of events. The Purpose accounts for the vast majority of occurrences, including most deaths, which follow a designed, orderly course. Clotho and Lachesis are agents of both Death and the Purpose, serving as physicians of last resort who cut the life-cords of those whose time has come. The Random accounts for the remainder, including senseless tragedies and accidents, and is served by the rogue entity Atropos, who cuts life-cords prematurely and without design. Clotho illustrates this relationship by forming a circle with his arms, within which Ralph sees a vision of thousands of playing cards fanned out in a rainbow of suits, with a disproportionate number of jokers—each one grinning and carrying a rusty scalpel—representing the Random's chaotic influence.

The Relationship Between the Forces

The Purpose and the Random are not equal in measure. Clotho explains that life is like a vast deck of cards: most events are purposeful, but a significant minority are random. The two forces define each other by contrast, like the red and black squares on a checkerboard. Clotho and Lachesis cannot interfere with Atropos under ordinary circumstances, nor he with them. However, when Atropos's meddling threatens a situation where many serious matters are balanced and counterbalanced, an effort to check him becomes necessary. This is the situation that arises in Derry, where Atropos has cut the life-cord of Ed Deepneau, an undesignated individual who belongs to neither the Purpose nor the Random, setting in motion a chain of events that could lead to a catastrophic imbalance.

The Undesignated and the Cosmic Crisis

The concept of the undesignated is central to the novel's crisis. Clotho explains that some lives bear no clear designation, and when Atropos touches such lives, trouble is always likely. He illustrates this by showing Ralph a row of seven cards turned over by an unseen hand: an ace, a deuce, a joker, a trey, a seven, a queen, and a final card that is blank. This blank card represents Ed Deepneau, a person who is neither a regular playing card nor a joker in the deck, but perfectly blank, up for grabs by either side. When Atropos severed Ed's life-cord, he set a terrible chain of events in motion, and the very fact that Ed has lived so long after his cord was severed indicates his power and importance. The Purpose and the Random are now in a state of crisis, and only Short-Timers like Ralph and Lois can oppose the will of Atropos and restore the balance.

The Higher Purpose and the Limits of Understanding

Clotho and Lachesis acknowledge that they are not the ultimate authorities in this cosmic hierarchy. They describe themselves as "working joes," messengers who are a long way down the ladder from the boardroom executives who actually make the decisions. Beyond the Short-Time and Long-Time levels of existence, there are yet other levels inhabited by beings they call All-Timers, which are either eternal or so close to it as to make no difference. Some of these beings are marvellous and wonderful; others are hideous beyond comprehension. It is something from one of these higher levels that has interested itself in Ed Deepneau, and something else from up there that made a countermove, which is Ralph and Lois themselves. Clotho and Lachesis cannot answer who "flashed the red light" on this deal because they do not really know, and they suggest that there may be no Random beyond a certain level, only a Higher Purpose. This cosmic framework establishes that the events in Derry are not merely local but have implications that ripple across all levels of existence, with the Tower of all existence itself at stake.
