Josh

Josh, known to Grace Lawson as Fuzz Pellet Josh, is the Photomat employee whose work connects him to the mysterious photograph that unsettles her life. He developed the roll of film Grace had taken to the store; because the photograph appeared among the prints, she suspects he put it there. The account establishes her suspicion and his presence at the store, but does not establish that he actually placed the photograph in the packet.

Identity and Role

Josh developed Grace Lawson’s film at Photomat. Grace remembers that he left the store not long after she collected the pictures, a detail that makes him seem significant when she tries to work out how the old photograph came to be mixed in with them. She thinks of him by the nickname Fuzz Pellet Josh, which marks him in her mind as a recognizable, if initially peripheral, figure in the chain of events.

Grace’s Suspicion

While alone after driving across the George Washington Bridge, Grace recalls that Josh handled the film and had left the store soon after she picked up the photographs. She concludes that he must have inserted the photograph into her packet. That conclusion gives her a concrete person to pursue, but it remains her inference rather than a confirmed account of Josh’s actions.

Grace calls the Photomat in Kasselton and recognizes the voice that answers as Josh’s: the bored, familiar voice confirms to her that he is back at the store. His voice turns the store from an anonymous business into a possible point of access to the photograph, sharpening Grace’s suspicion into an immediate lead.

Questioning at Photomat

Grace returns to Photomat with Scott Duncan. Josh is not there when they arrive; assistant manager Bruce says he is on his lunch break. Scott later has the Photomat envelope and asks Josh whether he developed the roll. Josh responds, “You say so.” The reply is noncommittal, and the available scene leaves the central question unresolved: it does not confirm either that Josh inserted the photograph or why it appeared in Grace’s packet.
