New Jersey

Just One Look

New Jersey provides the suburban terrain for several intersecting strands of the novel: a pursuit through Ho-Ho-Kus, police work in Kasselton, and a meeting near a school. Its roads and town borders make the setting more than a backdrop, alternately constraining movement and connecting local events to a wider regional search.

Suburban Roads and Pursuit

In Ho-Ho-Kus, a driver has nearly a minute’s head start, but the development’s winding cul-de-sacs and wooded residential lots funnel the pursuit toward a single true entrance and exit. The roads converge on Hollywood Avenue, turning the apparent sprawl into a bounded route. Charlaine Swain quickly tells Mike Swain what she saw and why she became suspicious, while leaving out why she had been looking out the window; the immediate chase thus unfolds alongside a partial account between the two.

Kasselton and Local Police Work

Kasselton is presented not as a sleepy town but as a municipality with thirty-eight police officers handling robberies, suspicious cars, school drug problems, vandalism, traffic congestion, illegal parking, accidents, and frequent false alarms from motion detectors. Its proximity to Paterson—only three miles from the town border—gives local policing a further concern: keeping urban decay at a safe distance. Captain Stuart Perlmutter’s experience underscores the contrast between that routine workload and the rarity of serious suspected killings in his jurisdiction: three deaths in three decades, each followed by a rapid arrest. When a later sequence brings Grace Lawson to a spot two blocks from a school, where Cram meets her on foot, the town’s ordinary local geography becomes a point of contact in the search surrounding Jack Lawson.

A Wider Regional Search

The investigation also reaches beyond New Jersey. Rocky Conwell is reported to have crossed the tollbooth at Exit 16 on the New York Thruway at 10:26 the previous night—the exact time and place recorded for Jack Lawson. The parallel places link two movements through the region and widen the story’s geography beyond the suburban towns where much of the action unfolds.
