Valley Hospital
Just One LookValley Hospital is where the emergency following the shooting gives way to a fragile reunion: Grace Lawson is treated there, reaches Jack Lawson in intensive care, and receives a late-night call from Jimmy X that reconnects the hospital scenes to the investigation surrounding Allaw and Still Night.
Emergency Arrival and Treatment
Two ambulances arrive after Grace fires at her attacker. One takes Jack away before she can see him; paramedics work on Grace, strap her to a stretcher, and wheel her toward the other ambulance. Captain Stuart Perlmutter is there, and Grace’s first clear concern is whether Emma and Max are safe. He tells her they are at the station and unharmed.
The hospital also figures in the response’s practical coordination. When asked where he is, Captain Stuart Perlmutter identifies Valley Hospital; he says he could reach the scene in fifteen minutes with the sirens. The exchange places the hospital within the urgent chain of calls and movement surrounding the crisis.
Jack in Intensive Care
Later, Grace leans on Charlaine Swain as they make their way through an empty corridor. They pass a nurse station and take the elevator to the third floor, where Jack is in intensive care. Grace finds Charlaine’s presence beside her oddly right, though she cannot explain why.
The ICU’s layout makes Jack’s isolation visible: four rooms have glass walls, with a nurse stationed centrally to monitor them, but only one room is occupied. Seeing Jack in bed, Grace registers a startling contrast with the powerful, gruff, six-foot-two man who had made her feel safe. She knows that his apparent smallness is partly her imagination; he has been hospitalized for only two days, though he has lost weight and is severely dehydrated. Still, the sight unsettles her beyond those physical changes.
A Late-Night Call
At nearly two in the morning, the phone beside Grace rings. The caller says he received her message about Allaw and Still Night; Grace recognizes Jimmy X’s voice and asks where he is. The call makes the hospital more than a place of treatment: from Jack’s bedside, Grace’s search reaches back toward the unresolved history connected to the bands.
