A Voyage Proposed

A Voyage Proposed
The value of what is lost
Wainamoinen proposes traveling to Pohyola for the Sampo. Ilmarinen warns that Louhi has locked it in a mountain and that the journey will be dangerous.
Allies gather
Lemminkainen joins the expedition, and the heroes prepare a ship and weapons. The mission turns a long-standing dispute over abundance into a direct confrontation.
The Ship Sails North

The Ship Sails North
A crew assembled by song
Wainamoinen fills the ship with heroes and maidens through magic. Ilmarinen and Lemminkainen take the oars while Wainamoinen steers.
Different kinds of strength
The vessel first struggles under ordinary rowing, then speeds once Ilmarinen takes the oars. The expedition depends on distinct forms of skill rather than on one hero alone.
The Mountain Is Opened

The Mountain Is Opened
Song and craft cooperate
Wainamoinen’s singing weakens the mountain’s doors, while Ilmarinen oils the locks and hinges. Their combined arts open the stronghold around the Sampo.
A boastful attempt fails
Lemminkainen tries to turn the Sampo by force but cannot move it. The heroes instead use an ox and a plow to loosen its deeply grown roots.
The Treasure Is Taken

The Treasure Is Taken
A successful theft
Wainamoinen and his companions carry the Sampo from the mountain and load it onto their vessel. Their success depends on planning and combined effort.
A rival is awakened
Louhi discovers the broken locks and the empty mountain. Her loss of the treasure turns the expedition into a pursuit across open water.
The Sampo Breaks

The Sampo Breaks
Battle on the ship
Louhi transforms into an enormous eagle and lands on the heroes’ vessel. Lemminkainen attacks her talons, while Wainamoinen tries to defend the treasure.
A victory without possession
Louhi pulls at the Sampo and drops it into the sea. It shatters into fragments, enriching the waters while ending the prospect of either side controlling it whole.
