Baengno (White Dew)
Kim Ji-young, Born 1982Baengno (White Dew) is the seasonal marker Jung Daehyun uses to remember the morning Kim Jiyoung first spoke as though she were her mother. In the novel’s opening, its arrival gives an ordinary shift in autumn weather a precise date—and frames the first sign of Jiyoung’s unusual behavior as something Daehyun initially mistakes for playfulness.
Seasonal Marker and Date
Daehyun remembers that morning as September 8, the morning of Baengno, described as the first night of autumn when the temperature drops below the dew point. The date is not merely background chronology: it anchors his recollection of the change he noticed in Jiyoung. Though the morning was sunny, she opened the veranda window, and cold air reached the kitchen table where he was eating breakfast.
The Morning Scene
Jiyoung returned to the table with hunched shoulders and spoke about the chill and the seasonal transition in a drawn-out, singsong manner: “I knew there was a little nip in the air these past few mornings, and today’s baengno! White morning dew on fields of gooold, on baengno when the nights grow cooold.” Daehyun laughed, thinking she sounded like an older woman, and she continued by advising him to take a light jacket.
Her imitation was of her mother, Oh Misook. Daehyun recognized its precision in the signature wink of her right eye and the elongated final syllable of “Jung seobang.” The seasonal advice therefore carries a double effect: it belongs naturally to Baengno’s cooler mornings, but, delivered in her mother’s manner, it also makes Jiyoung’s changed voice unmistakable.
Narrative Significance
Daehyun does not yet understand the episode as evidence of a serious problem. He assumes Jiyoung is joking, hugs her, and goes to work; her earlier staring into space and crying over sad songs seem to him like exhaustion from caring for their baby. Baengno consequently marks both the beginning of the remembered sequence and the gap between what Daehyun observes and what he thinks it means. The date makes the scene easy to recall, while the sudden cold air and Jiyoung’s borrowed voice make an otherwise ordinary breakfast feel like a threshold in their family life.
