Charonte

Last Christmas

The Charonte are depicted through Simi, a demon daughter of Ash whose playful holiday appearance contrasts with her clear perception of Caleb (Malphas)’s grief. In this brief scene, her ability to recognize what he tries to hide gives the Charonte their most distinctive supported trait: an ease in sensing another person’s inner state.

Depiction

Simi joins Caleb (Malphas) and Acheron wearing a short Santa dress, with bells hanging from her red horns. The narration describes her as adorable. Her festive, conspicuous appearance gives the scene a light surface, but it does not prevent her from noticing the sadness beneath Caleb’s smile.

Emotional Perception

Simi asks Caleb why he is sad. He denies it, yet she insists that she can feel the sadness in his heart. The narration then identifies her as Charonte and says that the Charonte could easily see inside him, presenting her perception as more than a guess about his expression. Caleb admits inwardly that she is right: he remains deeply sad because he is the only one present who has not found someone. His outward reassurance and inward loneliness make her sensitivity legible through the contrast between what he says and what she detects.

The scene offers this capacity through a single character rather than explaining how it works or establishing its limits. Simi’s response nevertheless gives the Charonte a notable role in the moment: she recognizes an emotion Caleb is trying to conceal, while his smile fails to conceal it from her.
