Sanctuary

Last Christmas

Sanctuary is a bar and grill owned by a family of shapeshifters, introduced as the setting for a Christmas gathering that Caleb reluctantly attends. Its festive welcome stands in sharp contrast to his dislike of the season, while the music and hospitality gradually make the place feel less hostile to him.

Identity and Setting

Sanctuary belongs to a family of shapeshifters and serves as a bar and grill. The narrative presents it not just as a business but as a gathering place: members of the local community decorate it, sing there, and welcome Caleb when he arrives. Its holiday appearance is emphatic enough to seem as if the North Pole had exploded inside.

The Christmas Gathering

At Christmas 3250, Ambrose and his crew have talked Caleb into coming to Sanctuary despite his hatred of Christmas and the season surrounding it. Xevikan has also been instrumental in getting him there. Caleb pauses half a block away, considering a brief visit, then crosses the street and approaches the entrance.

Remi Peltier, a huge blond werebear, stands guard at the door in a Santa hat. When Caleb asks whether he lost a bet, Remi explains that his wife made him wear it because she thought he looked cute. The exchange gives Caleb an opening for mockery, but he recognizes that the situation hits too close to home and says nothing before going inside.

Inside, Aimee Peltier comes up to Caleb, kisses his cheek, and hands him a hot, frothy yellow drink whose contents he cannot identify. Her greeting is uncomplicatedly affectionate: she is glad he came. Outside, the Howlers sing carols; although the volume makes Caleb wonder why the humans are not complaining, the singers are talented, and their music calms him. The setting thus counters his expectation of an ordeal with a series of small gestures of welcome.

Seasonal Contrast and Narrative Role

The Christmas gathering follows a story in which the solstice carries both promise and danger. Lilliana chooses that date for her marriage to Caleb because she associates it with the new year, new beginnings, and rebirth; Caleb instead fears the longest night, when portals open and dangerous things may enter the world. In a later solstice scene, the veil is thin and anything crossing over would be more powerful than usual. Sanctuary's Christmas scene offers a contrasting seasonal register: communal music, decoration, and hospitality, with carols soothing a visitor who still resents the holiday. The restaurant gives that change of mood a concrete social setting without erasing Caleb's reluctance.
