The First Fall

The First Human Eclipse
Civilizational loss
Disease, famine, and the loss of technical knowledge reduce the First human species to scattered communities. Ruins survive as reminders of a civilization whose methods can no longer be recovered.
Slow recovery
A new society rises in Patagonia, but species-wide senescence limits its vitality. Humanity survives, yet its next cultural flowering remains vulnerable to old weaknesses.
A Second Beginning

The Second Men
New capacities
A biologically renewed people develops exceptional perception, sympathy, and intellectual aptitude. They can more naturally pursue both dispassionate knowledge and love of others.
An exposed achievement
Their cooperative nature supports long periods of peace, but also makes private ambition a weak motor for change. Their civilization is repeatedly interrupted by disease and conflict.
Remaking the Species

Humanity Takes Its Design in Hand
Life as a craft
The Third Men make biological manipulation their central art, perfecting plants and animals and debating the costs of shaping life. Their technical mastery gradually turns toward humanity itself.
Engineered successors
A secret project creates the Fourth Men, whose enlarged brains offer unprecedented intellectual power but exclude ordinary human needs. Their success begins another struggle over what a person should be.
The Fifth Men’s Maturity

A Broader Human Form
Reconciliation of capacities
The Fifth Men combine long life, rich perception, individual freedom, and telepathic communication. Their advanced society directs much of its effort toward art, science, and philosophy.
New limits
Their growing engagement with the past brings grief as well as knowledge. Later, the Moon’s changing orbit forces a choice between preserving Earth and securing a future elsewhere.
The Last Human Species

Toward the Last Men
A long preparation
After humanity moves to Neptune, repeated species rise from primitive conditions. The Fifteenth and Sixteenth Men advance the deliberate redesign of human nature.
A final synthesis
The Seventeenth Men create a new type, and the Eighteenth Men inherit an exceptionally developed social and spiritual life. Their achievement is real but cannot outlast the approaching stellar disaster.
