Engrasi Salazar
Legado en los huesosEngrasi Salazar is Amaia Salazar’s aunt, a family caretaker whose ordinary acts of shelter and reassurance become crucial when a flood and an attack place Ibai in danger. She is presented both in the calm intimacy of caring for a child and in the aftermath of a violent assault that leaves her gravely injured.
Family and Everyday Care
Engrasi helps Amaia and James arrange care for Ibai so they can go to Bilbao. She insists that the child stay with her, while Amaia’s sister has arranged for Ernesto to take charge of the bakery and plans to come help Engrasi. The exchange makes her home a dependable part of the family’s practical support system, not merely a place to visit.
That care continues through the storm. After bathing Ibai, Engrasi is at home by candlelight and the warmth of the fireplace when the power fails. She reports that Ibai has taken his bottle and is sleeping peacefully, even as the weather worsens around them. Her calm account offers Amaia reassurance at a moment when the flood is disrupting life across town.
Memory and Connections
When Amaia asks about the mother of a young man who died by suicide, Engrasi remembers her as Margarita Berasategui and describes her as a very sweet woman, adding that her death was a pity. The brief recollection gives Engrasi a personal memory of someone connected to the case and shows Amaia turning to her aunt for information as well as family support.
The Flood and the Attack
The storm transforms Engrasi’s home from a place of safety into a scene of violence. In a frantic call to Amaia, Ros reports that Engrasi is alive but has suffered a massive blow to the head and is bleeding. The house is wrecked, and Engrasi has fought back fiercely; Ibai, however, has been taken. The emergency is compounded by the flood: ambulances are occupied elsewhere, and even the firefighters do not know whether they can reach the house.
Engrasi’s role in the story thus carries a sharp reversal. She had kept Ibai safe through the blackout and rising water, but could not prevent the attack and abduction. Her survival, severe injury, and defense of the child make her a central part of the family crisis that confronts Amaia.
