Seine
Les MisérablesThe Seine marks two sharply contrasting thresholds in the novel: the route to safety for Jean Valjean and Marius, and the place where Inspector Javert ends his life. Its banks offer an apparent escape into the open city, but its current and darkness also give physical form to an abyss from which there is no return.
