Cambridge

Lessons in Chemistry

Cambridge is linked in the novel to Calvin Evans’s rowing career and to the scholarship that took him there. The connection surfaces through documents Elizabeth examines after his death, making Cambridge part of her effort to understand the choices behind his past.

Setting and Association

The evidence identifies Cambridge through its rowing program rather than through a detailed description of the place. Calvin tells Reverend Wakely that he rows for Cambridge on a full-ride rowing scholarship. In a separate exchange, Wakely says that he is not a rower, although he loves the water and grew up in Commons, California, where people row as well.

Calvin’s Rowing Connection

A folder labeled “Rowing” lies at the bottom of the third box Elizabeth and Miss Frask took from Hastings. Elizabeth initially expects it to contain newspaper clippings about the victories of Calvin’s Cambridge boat. Instead, it holds his post-Cambridge employment offers, including positions at major universities and pharmaceutical companies. The folder’s contents revise her expectation: its label points toward his rowing years, but its papers document the professional possibilities that followed them.

Place in the Plot

Cambridge becomes significant through the contrast between Calvin’s prestigious opportunities and the choice that brought him to Hastings. Among the offers Elizabeth finds there is a Hastings proposal promising a private laboratory, a provision other institutions offered too. What distinguished Hastings was its insulting salary and the signature of Donatti. Elizabeth also remembers Calvin circling Hastings’s return address, connecting his decision to accept the offer with Commons, California. In this way, Cambridge marks the earlier stage of a career whose later turn Elizabeth reconstructs from the evidence in his files.
